USDOT Number, Start To Finish
Your USDOT number is your company's ID with FMCSA. Inspectors, brokers and insurance companies all look you up by it.
We file the application, make sure your company information is right the first time and tell you what's next. For most new carriers, that's MC authority, insurance and UCR.
Who Needs A USDOT Number
You need one if you operate a commercial motor vehicle across state lines. That's a vehicle that:
- Has a GVWR or GCWR (or actual weight) of 10,001 lbs or more, or
- Is built or used to carry more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for pay, or
- Is built or used to carry more than 15 passengers (including the driver), not for pay, or
- Hauls hazardous materials in an amount that needs placards.
Many states also require a USDOT number for trucks that never leave the state. Ask us about yours.
Filing Through Motus
FMCSA now takes new applications through its Motus system. The company official has to verify their identity through Login.gov with a photo ID. We walk you through it. More on Motus.
After You Get Your Number
- Mark your trucks. Both sides of each power unit need your company name and "USDOT" followed by your number.
- Keep it current. You file an MCS-150 update every 2 years. Miss it and the number gets deactivated.
- Get ready for your new entrant audit. New carriers are watched for 18 months. FMCSA usually audits after at least 3 months of running. Check if you'd pass.
