Frequently Asked Questions

Under 26 CFR § 41.6071(a)-1(a), the return is due by the last day of the month following the month you first use the vehicle in the taxable period. The taxable period starts July 1, so a truck already in service when the period opens has its return due by August 31. Buy a truck in November and your due date is December 31 instead.

The maximum is $550 per vehicle per year, for a taxable gross weight over 75,000 pounds; lighter vehicles pay less. If a truck's first taxable use falls after the first month of the taxable period, the tax is prorated for the months remaining rather than charged in full.

IFTA returns are filed quarterly and are due the last day of the month after each quarter closes — so April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. Send us your mileage and fuel records and we calculate, file and pay in every jurisdiction you ran in.

Kentucky, New Mexico, New York and Oregon each run their own weight-distance or mileage tax separate from IFTA, and each needs its own permit. Running through any of them without being set up is a citation waiting to happen. We file all four.

We handle the documentation and represent you through an IFTA or DOT audit. The carriers who struggle in an audit are the ones without trip records tying miles to fuel receipts, so the work that protects you happens quarterly, long before an auditor calls.
