Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about DOT compliance, operating authority, and our services.

A DOT (Department of Transportation) number is a unique identifier assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to commercial motor vehicles engaged in interstate commerce. You need a DOT number if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, transports hazardous materials requiring a placard, or carries 9 or more passengers for compensation or 16 or more passengers without compensation. TruckWise Reporting can help you determine if you need a DOT number and handle the registration process.

Operating authority, also known as an MC (Motor Carrier) number, is a grant from the FMCSA that authorizes a motor carrier to transport freight or passengers in interstate commerce. Different types of authority exist depending on the type of cargo or service: common carrier, contract carrier, broker, and freight forwarder. Your MC number is separate from your DOT number -- you may need both depending on your operations. TruckWise Reporting handles the full authority registration process from start to finish.

After filing with the FMCSA, there is typically a 10-21 business day waiting period before your operating authority becomes active. During this time, protests can be filed against your application. Once the waiting period is complete and no protests are filed, your authority will be granted. TruckWise Reporting prepares and submits your application as quickly as possible to start the clock, and we guide you through every step of the process.

A BOC-3 filing is a designation of process agents required by the FMCSA for all motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders operating under federal authority. It designates a legal representative (process agent) in each state where you operate who can accept legal documents on your behalf. A BOC-3 filing is mandatory before your operating authority can become active. TruckWise Reporting includes BOC-3 filing as part of our authority registration service.

UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) is a federally mandated annual registration and fee system for motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies operating in interstate or international commerce. The registration fee is based on the number of vehicles in your fleet. UCR registration must be renewed annually and failure to register can result in fines and penalties. TruckWise Reporting handles your UCR registration and sends you reminders when renewal is due.

You need an IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) license if you operate a qualified motor vehicle (weighing over 26,000 pounds or having three or more axles regardless of weight) in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions (48 US states and 10 Canadian provinces). IFTA simplifies fuel tax reporting by allowing you to file one tax return instead of filing separately with each state. TruckWise Reporting assists with IFTA license applications and quarterly fuel tax filings.

IRP (International Registration Plan) is a registration agreement among US states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces that provides for the payment of license fees on the basis of the distance operated in each jurisdiction. If you operate commercial vehicles in multiple states, IRP allows you to register in your base state and receive a cab card that covers all jurisdictions where you travel. TruckWise Reporting handles IRP applications, renewals, and fleet additions.

The FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is a secure online database that provides real-time information about commercial driver's license (CDL) holders' drug and alcohol program violations. Employers are required to query the Clearinghouse for current and prospective employees and report any drug and alcohol violations. Carriers must conduct pre-employment queries and annual queries for all CDL drivers. TruckWise Reporting can help you set up and manage your Clearinghouse compliance.
