IRP & Vehicle Registration

International Registration Plan setup, renewals, updates, and vehicle management for interstate carriers.

IRP Account Setup

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a registration reciprocity agreement among the 48 contiguous United States, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces. Under IRP, commercial motor vehicles traveling in two or more jurisdictions register with their base jurisdiction and receive apportioned plates that allow legal operation across all member jurisdictions.

Setting up an IRP account requires submitting an application to your base state, providing vehicle information, determining which jurisdictions you will operate in, and paying registration fees apportioned based on the percentage of miles traveled in each jurisdiction. TruckWise Reporting handles the entire IRP account setup process for you. We prepare your application, calculate your apportioned fees, and work with your base state to get your account established and your cab cards issued as quickly as possible.

Registration Renewal

IRP registrations must be renewed annually. The renewal process requires updating your mileage records for each jurisdiction, recalculating apportioned fees based on actual miles traveled during the previous reporting period, and submitting your renewal application before your registration expiration date. Late renewals can result in penalties and lapses in registration that prevent you from legally operating interstate.

TruckWise Reporting manages your IRP renewal from start to finish. We compile your mileage data, prepare the renewal application, calculate the updated fees, and submit everything on time. Our IRP registration renewal service ensures continuous coverage so your vehicles stay legal on the road without interruption.

Registration Updates

Changes to your IRP account may be needed throughout the registration year. Common updates include adding or removing jurisdictions as your routes change, correcting vehicle information, updating business details such as address or name changes, and adjusting your fleet weight specifications. Each of these changes requires a formal amendment to your IRP account.

We handle all types of IRP registration updates promptly. Whether you are expanding into new states, modifying your fleet configuration, or making administrative corrections, TruckWise Reporting prepares and files the necessary amendments with your base jurisdiction. We ensure your cab cards and registration documents reflect the most current information at all times.

Add or Delete Vehicle

When you purchase a new truck or trailer, it must be added to your IRP account before it can legally operate in interstate commerce. Adding a vehicle requires providing the VIN, make, model, year, gross vehicle weight, and the jurisdictions where it will travel. The registration fees are prorated based on the number of months remaining in your registration year.

Similarly, when you sell, trade, or retire a vehicle from your fleet, it should be deleted from your IRP account. Timely vehicle deletion can result in credits that offset the cost of adding replacement vehicles. TruckWise Reporting processes vehicle additions and deletions quickly, ensuring your IRP account always reflects your active fleet and that you receive any applicable credits for removed vehicles.

Farm Plate Registration

Agricultural operations that transport their own products or farm supplies may qualify for farm plate registration, which offers reduced registration fees and simplified requirements compared to standard commercial registration. Farm plates are available in most states, though eligibility requirements and fee structures vary by jurisdiction.

Farm plate registration can provide significant cost savings for qualifying operations, but navigating the application requirements across different states can be confusing. TruckWise Reporting determines your eligibility, prepares the farm plate application, and handles the filing with the appropriate state agency. We help agricultural carriers take advantage of available cost savings while maintaining full compliance with state registration laws.

Why IRP Matters for Your Operation

Operating without proper IRP registration is one of the most common and costly compliance violations for interstate carriers. Roadside inspections in any jurisdiction can result in citations, fines, and even being placed out of service if your vehicle is not properly registered. IRP violations can also negatively impact your carrier safety score in the FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS), potentially triggering interventions and affecting your ability to secure loads from safety-conscious shippers and brokers.

Beyond enforcement concerns, accurate IRP registration ensures you are only paying fees proportional to the miles you actually travel in each jurisdiction. Incorrect mileage reporting can lead to overpayment in some states or underpayment in others, which creates audit liability. TruckWise Reporting helps you maintain accurate records, stay properly registered, and avoid the financial and operational consequences of IRP non-compliance.
