Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

Form 2290 HVUT Filing

We file your heavy vehicle use tax and send you the stamped Schedule 1 you need for plates.

What We Do

Your 2290, Filed Right

If your truck runs at 55,000 lbs or more, you owe the federal heavy vehicle use tax once a year. The IRS sends back a stamped Schedule 1 as proof of payment. You need it to register or renew your plates.

We file the return, get the Schedule 1 back and send it to you. When you add a truck mid-year, we file for that truck too, with the tax prorated for the months left.

What It Costs

Taxable gross weightYearly tax
Under 55,000 lbsNo tax
55,000 lbs$100
55,001 – 75,000 lbs$100 plus $22 for each 1,000 lbs over 55,000
Over 75,000 lbs$550

When It's Due

The tax year runs July 1 to June 30. Your return is due by the last day of the month after the month you first use the truck that year.

  • Truck on the road in July: due August 31.
  • Bought a truck and first ran it in November: due December 31.

Low-Mileage Trucks

If you expect a truck to run 5,000 miles or less on public roads for the year (7,500 for farm trucks), the tax is suspended. You still have to file to claim it. If the truck goes over the limit, you owe the full year's tax.

It's your proof you paid. The state needs it before it will register or renew plates on a heavy truck, and that includes IRP apportioned plates.
